Why are we collectively tired? What are the causes? What is the difference between physical and mental fatigue? What should we eat to keep our magnesium levels high? Amandine, Céline and Arne answer these questions (and more).
Bestselling author and food scientist Amandine de Paepe enjoyed an extensive university education. Among other things, she studied biomedical sciences, nutritional sciences and obtained a European master's degree in nutritional sciences at the universities of Wageningen (NL), Cork (Ireland), Lund (Sweden) and Paris (FR). After her international career in the pharmaceutical sector, she threw herself into medical nutritional advice which she combined with analyses such as specific blood tests, DNA or sugar tests and personalized supplements. Over the years, Amandine turned her passion into her life's work. Today, she is the inspirer behind Insentials, the Belgian brand of vitamins & supplements.
Arne already knew at the age of 14 that he wanted to study chemistry. Four years later, he made that choice and has never regretted it. After experience in the steel and paint industry, he focused on biological and biochemical processes in the human body. Through ten years of working together with top international athletes and self-study, he's learned a great deal about the human body. At Insentials, Arne works with Amandine on science, reads scientific studies, follows European legislation and develops raw materials. He manages notification files and is sometimes a guest in podcasts or as a speaker at events.
Céline is an experienced nutritionist specializing in sports nutrition and orthomolecular therapy. She also has a background in communications and education. At Insentials, she offers consultations, gives nutritional advice, advises clients on our supplements and supports people in achieving a healthy lifestyle. Since the start of Insentials, she's been super excited about both the supplements and the concept, especially the Smart vitamins with their unique duo-capsule, which are a valuable supplement for many.
The podcast discusses the idea of "intuitive eating," focusing on awareness of the body and our eating habits. The speakers highlight the crucial role of healthy gut flora for both physical and mental health and how a disruption of this can cause fatigue and increased cravings for sugar.
They also discuss the importance of positive social relationships for our happiness and general well-being as well as our energy levels. Breaking the vicious cycle of unhealthy eating, is key to maintaining a healthy diet and energy level.
The effect of magnesium on melatonin production is discussed, with magnesium being recommended to be taken in the morning because of its role in energy production during the day. This helps with evening fatigue and better sleep.
Different forms of magnesium are discussed, with liquid magnesium being considered very effective because of its better absorption in the body. Magnesium citrate is recommended for muscle cramps, while other forms, such as magnesium oxide, are less effective and often have unwanted side effects.
The effect of taurine, often misunderstood because of its association with energy drinks, is explained. Taurine is an important amino acid that helps protect the heart, support blood pressure and create new nerve pathways in the brain. It's essential for child development and also supports brain function in adults.
Caffeine is discussed with an emphasis on the importance of moderate use (40-80 milligrams per day) to maintain positive effects on brain function and metabolism, without falling into abuse as often seen in the fitness world.
Carnitine plays a role in transporting fatty acids to the mitochondria in cells, where they are converted into energy. This process is useful for athletes and daily use to release more energy from fats, but it doesn't lead to significant weight loss.
The discussion emphasizes that there are no magic weight loss pills and that healthy diet, exercise and proper metabolic balance are essential for weight management.
The importance of having a balanced and stress-free approach to healthy eating is discussed. Excessive focus on healthy eating can lead to stress, which has negative effects on the body, such as an impact on vitamin B12 levels. Healthy eating should be fun and enjoyable, not stressful. The importance of proper meal planning is emphasized to make healthy choices easier and less stressful.
The podcast ends with general tips to combat fatigue. The important thing is not to accept fatigue as normal. Being constantly tired indicates a problem that needs to be addressed, such as by adjusting dietary patterns, replenishing key nutrients and identifying and reducing possible stress factors. A combination of a healthy diet, regular exercise and a good sleep pattern is essential for combating fatigue and maintaining energy and well-being.
